Tilghman Island

We are at Tilghman Island now enjoying some marina and pool time. Neat place, very laid back and casual. Not much here other than a few restaurants and a tackle shop. It is a waterman’s town. We elected not to stay on the narrows since we were going to be here a few days and wanted some breeze (and a nice pool).

The island seems to be in transition. The waterman’s life is becoming harder and harder, and so the island is trying to recreate itself. If you come, check out The Tilghman Island Country Store for lunch, ice cream and provisioning. They have a good selection of wine and craft beers as well.

An interesting breakfast, lunch and dinner spot is the Two If By Sea restaurant and bakery, especially watching chef and owner Henry Miller baking up some pastries and Smith Island cakes, which are 8 – 15 layers of traditionally yellow cake with chocolate icing in between and on the outside. The story is that the Smith Island ladies made these cakes for their men who would be out working on their boats for weeks at a time. If a top layer dried up before getting eaten, it could be peeled off to enjoy the fresh layers below. It is said that the more layers a woman put on the cake reflected how much she loved you.
