The run from Wrightsville was mostly uneventful. We hit Snows Cut, which runs from the Carolina Beach area over to the Cape Fear river, at the right tide, thus shot through at almost 10 knots! Then, it was just a 15 mile stretch down the Cape Fear river to Southport.
Southport’s claim to fame is it’s Hollywood connection. Lots of movies and TV series have been filmed in the town.
It was Pirate Invasion weekend in Southport so we were lucky to have gotten a marina tie-up. Caleb was ready for it (also thinking he might get noticed by some Hollywood movie scout 🙂 ).
Alas, when we arrived, to his dismay, the festival was cancelled.
But, he did get to wrangle with his first alligator.
Then, like a salty sea dog pirate, he then promptly hit the rum!
Again, it’s a Hollywood town. Recent movie filming was Safe Haven. So, of course we had to watch the movie while there, and it was cool to see the waterfront area in the film which we were walking by everyday.
Unfortunately, we did not take a lot of pictures!
We hooked up with fellow Stingray Harbour Marina friends Chuck and Judy Young, who now live in Southport, for dinner and they had us over for watching Tech football game and lunch. Chuck graciously gave us a tour of the area and Oak Island. It was good to see them. Again, we forgot to get a picture!
We got s shot of their condo, which is on the ICW, as we pulled out though.
Sunset over Southport.
Caleb partying with his new friends in Southport at the Old American Fish Company (where scenes from Safe Haven was filmed).
On to Myrtle Beach to see Howard’s brother and his wife.
