Southport to Myrtle Beach

Caleb here … I’m giving my crew a break and  writing this one … 🙂

The route to Myrtle Beach was beautiful but passing the several inlets was a little hairy (although I was snoring, so taking the crews word for it on that point).  The captain said the currents were tough, and active captain was indicating lots of shoaling. We never had any water depth issues (and we were passing thru at low tide).

We landed at Barefoot Marina in Myrtle Beach.  No good anchorages in Myrtle Beach, which means they will make me walk more (oh my aching paws)!

The captain’s (Howard) brother and his wife, Carol and Don, joined us for a few days, and we spent some time with them doing the town.  They made me go everywhere with them (well, almost everywhere … I got to stay on the boat some — think home alone –and catch up on my much needed cavalier sleep).  They had fun!

Had some beach time.

Rented a car, bad-ass (ha ha) black camaro (with paddle shifters says captain Howard). I think I heard some mention of having to buy new tires, and there was a burnt rubber smell.

They made me go to Pawleys Island for a day. Beaches were beautiful but the community was too claustrophobic for us, and not many other pooches, except the one whose owner had tied him to the trash can in the parking lot!

Hiked around Huntington Beach State Park and ran across these guys.  Fortunately, for me, they were not hungry.

The gators are in their natural habitat.  Interestingly, the many birds of the area are dependent on the gators to minimize their predators so they hang out around the crocs.

The first mate (thankfully they did not allow dogs!) toured the moorish style early 1900s summer home of the Huntington family who donated the land for the park.  The homes name is Atalaya, meaning Watchtower (whatever!).

What most rooms looked like.

They even had an oyster shucking room.  (Blah, blah, blah)

Beautiful state park for anyone interested in camping, hiking, biking, and it has an awesome beach as well ( but only the southern end allows dogs). Much nicer than all the other Myrtle Beach campgrounds.  As long as you don’t mind sharing with the crocs!

We are waiting for for some mail to be delivered, then we are off to Georgetown then Charleston hopefully by Wednesday this week.

Hope the weather report continues to be this:
