After having dinner Thursday night with some fellow Stingray Harbor friends we (by chance) ran into, we left Myrtle Beach and are taking the slow cruise to Georgetown, SC, which is only about 65 miles south of Myrtle Beach.
Our first stop after 40 miles was the Thoroughfare Creek anchorage, where we spent Friday night.
Dreamer at anchor in Thoroughfare Creek.
Caleb was excited.
The anchorage is about 3/4 mile (some active captain posts say 2-3 miles) up the creek and to starboard off the sand dune. Red arrow marks the anchorage, yellow is ICWs magenta line down the Waccamaw River.
It is fairly deep close into the shore/sand dune. Anchor to starboard, on the dune side. We had 17 feet of water with a 60′ scope on the anchor. The current runs at about a knot with a 3 ft tide. Used the sentinel and trip line, but anchor came up with no problems (except very muddy). Three small trawlers in there with us. We had plenty of room.
Very peaceful spot during week, but don’t go on a weekend. We had a few local powerboats hanging out late on a Friday, but the cleared out at dusk. They said it would be packed with powerboats on Saturday.
Below is the 360 degree view.
The dune is on Sandy Island which is a preserve that has nice hiking trails. Walk to top of the dune to reach the trails. Pet friendly!
Hiking along the trails, Spanish Moss abounds.
And you must watch out for the following.
On the back side of the dune is a lagoon where boats without mast height can anchor.
Sunset from top of the dune.
Contemplating the potential weather now.
