Georgia On My Mind

Can’t figure out why everybody keeps saying to skip the Georgia ICW and go outside (?).  It has been the most beautiful untouched part of the coastal waterway so far.

It was a chilly start this morning, so the Admiral had his foul weather gear on …

Yes, there are a few trouble spots that require good planning around the tides, but well worth the small effort.  There was just as much planning in South Carolina due to skinny water spots (which we did not plan for), and the scenery was not as beautiful.  Even the Hell Gate Passage today did not live up to its name.  We had to stop for the night due to the fact that the next passage requires it to be timed with high tide.

The tides are HUGE!

Shrimp quesadillas for lunch underway, served on our finest boat china!

After a 63 nautical mile day, we anchored in New Teakettle Creek.  Dolphins swam with us almost all day.  The anchorage here is very isolated.  Only sounds are the rippling of water against the hull and an occasional bird squawking.  Nothing in sight other than marsh land, a full moon, and stars. It has been very strange getting use to this type of anchorage as compared to the Chesapeake Bay, but very cool once you get the hang of it.

The captain had to put his guinea boots (sexy) on to do the puppy potty run … Shoreline in the marsh is either muddy or oyster shells.

Back to this morning, we left Thunderbolt Marina this morning at sunrise with a full moon also on the western horizon.  Great marina and marine services. We were hold up there for 5 days due to engine problems, waiting for parts (new starter) to be delivered. The good (and the bad) of being there that long is that they deliver a half dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts to your boat EVERY morning!

Beautiful sunsets at Thunderbolt.

These crazy squawking night birds scare the beejeezus out of you on the docks at night!  I finally snuck up on one for a picture.  Not sure what they are yet.

Creepy but beautiful full moon through the Spanish moss in “town”.

Plan is to stop into Jekyll Island tomorrow for a night, then Cumberland Island, and Fernandina Beach early next week.

The captain is “checking the anchor” and my wine is poured … Full moon, Ray Charles crooning about Georgia on the tunes, Dreamer out!

  1. Enjoying your trip and remembering ours. I will always remember the chilly mornings in the marshes and pulling anchor at sunrise. Those tides are crazy aren’t they?! Head to the Palace Saloon in Fernandina Beach. Florida’s oldest bar. Skinny water between there and Jax Beach so watch out. And so the adventure continues….

  2. Yes, Eileen, some wicked tides and currents! Although Teakettle was a very quiet anchorage with very minimal current (one of the few we’ve seen though). Thanks for the tip about the Palace Saloon in Fernandina Beach! We should be down that way by end of this week.
