We have been in South Cackalacky for a few days now.
Before leaving Georgia, we did a stop at Isle of Hope in Savannah where we were able to visit with my cousin Jessica and her “boys”. It was good to see a face from home. With 4 adults, 2 kids, and 12 paws on a boat, I can’t believe we did not take a picture!! Thanks for the doughnuts Jess and Corey!
Our first stop in South Carolina, of course, was one of our favorite ICW towns … beautiful Beaufort. It was just as good the second time around as it was the first … Except for the captains impromptu visit to Harvey’s, the local “old school” barber shop, where he jokingly said “he’d like a flat top”.
Need I say more … ?
Anyway, we left Beaufort this morning headed to Charleston, but have stopped for the night in Toogoodoo Creek.
Due to currents in a cut just before Charleston, we have to stay this side of the cut tonight, and Toogoodoo looked like a good spot, but it is still about a 25 nautical mile trek to Charleston.
The name, Toogoodoo, is intriguing (and fun to pronounce), yet I cannot find any good information on its history with my currently limited internet access ( any help appreciated).
It is beautiful and serene, and even though we share the anchorage with three other boats, it feels as if we are in a very remote place. You can barely (if at all) see the next boat pictured below.
It is just before sunset now, and we are awaiting what should be a spectacular night of star-gazing (although this may not get posted until after I chow down on the grilled steak dinner my captain is cooking).
Unlike our trip south, we are finding we are able to sail a bit more. Maybe, it’s only that we feel more comfortable with the route, but it has definitely been fun sailing up the ICW when we can. Below, we are sailing down Brickyard Creek north of Beaufort, as military planes (F-16s ?) take off and land on Parris Island.
We will be in Charleston tomorrow and hope to do some more offshore runs (weather permitting) north to Cape Fear, where we will head inside to Bald Head Island, then Wrightsville Beach where we will go outside again to Beaufort, NC and spend time at Cape Lookout.
So, for anyone interested, from here, if you want to join us for a portion of the trip, we’d love to have you. It has been hard to coordinate having others join us for a multitude of reasons, but now the timing is good. As long as you understand its a small boat, with a dog onboard, and tight sleeping quarters, we’d love to have you. From Charleston north, it is a drivable distance, although we would have to figure out the land-based logistics, but whatever can be worked out, we’d love to share the experience! Let us know if you are interested.

The Toogoodoo tribe was fierce and warlike so if you see any RUN
